5 star.
This is a rare piece of magic indeed, it put its spell on me from page one, big action to start leading to a very personal first person experience.
The story is told through the perspective of Ian Troy, of the magic wielding race, the Shinree, enslaved and drugged they trudge through their life of hell. Answering to whatever master holds their chains. The story is not his fight for freedom as you might’ve expected, but a fight for his master’s kingdom and freedom from their oppression.
The writing is first class, apart from some spelling mistakes and odd words missed out, it is in-depth and fast pace. The characters are exceptionally well written and Troy has you throwing your arm in the air with fury at his self-doubt and loathing, shadows of Thomas Covenant.
This book ranks up with the best fantasy I’ve read, and that’s a lot.
I’ll be reading the rest in the series for sure.

If you pick up this free Zombie book on Amazon then you won’t be disappointed, if I’d paid for it I still wouldn’t have been disappointed.
After 2 pages, on the first attempt, I put this book down firstly because it’s told in the present tense, which is a personal dislike and secondly, because the poor editing and failure to use the present tense correctly. I checked the reviews online and gave it a second read and boy was I glad I did.
This Zombies novel is as good as I’ve read, shades of Marc Tufo at times and that’s not a bad thing. The action is fast and compulsive, the characters realistic and heart felt. The story an excellent twist on a well-used genre.
Please give it a try, if you like zombie, then this is good.
My main gripe, is that this cracking book could well have had 5 stars with a little editing and basic grammar check.

Left Alive by Jeremy Lazlo

As you might have already seen, I’m fast becoming a fan of Mr. Lazlo; his dark, skeptical view of the world fits in perfectly with this novel. ‘Left alive,’ is a post apocalyptic zombie thriller, of the best kind. It is set in an empty, distraught, spiteful world; one that seeps through people skins and turns them into Zombies. A genetic project that went horribly wrong has ruined the world.
This is perhaps the darkest and most demoralizing Zombie book I’ve read, I loved it. No, big love interest and a new society, no, just death, death and more seething death. It’s hard to see how there will be a happy ending in this one. But who reads Zombies for happy endings?
I’d recommend this novel to anyone who likes the dark side, don’t expect a laugh a minute and you won’t be disappointed.

The Eden Plague by David Vandyke

If you like thrillers, blacktops, and end of the world scenarios this is a great novel for you. It’s free and I love the style, the concept and the twist at the end.
A super virus can save humanity, if only the government would stand aside, the plague is here and has been for thousands of years, the cure has arrived, a group of special forces and scientists work together to save the world, or do they.
Five stars and I’ll let you know what I think of book two soon.

Vampires and Witches, poorly done.

The Orcus Games: New awakening by Louise Herman
This book falls into the category, tries hard, but doesn’t reach the goal, you know ‘The clubman of the year.’ Louise uses far too many adjectives in her writing at it feels like it was written by a teenage girl. The use of show and not tell, doesn’t allow the story or the character any depth.
The actual premise of Wolf men, Vampires and witches battling it out, with bosses, is good, but the poor style makes it a two star novel that I wouldn’t recommend.

Ten Thousand heroes, 5 star children's read.

Ten Thousand Heroes by P.T.Mayes
    Five stars.
As soon as I started to read I realized this was a children’s book, aimed at 7 plus audience, at first I thought I’d be a little disappointed, but it proved to be quite the reverse.
The story starts like all good tales, in a normal village, in Kent, with three normal kids. From there it quickly elevates itself to one of the best children’s books I’ve read, as good as any Dahl or any Blyton. The style falls somewhere between the two with some deliciously disgusting and other parts filled with wholesome adventure and lots of heroes and villains, ten thousand to be exact. Every chapter left me giggling and turning to the next, I was drawn deeply into the world of Little Shipley and didn’t want to leave. Alas after two day I’d finished this future classic and walked away with a smile, like a certain cat, plastered on my face.
If you or your kids like reading, then this comedy, adventure has to be on your to read list.
If you like this, try ‘The Family Itch’ I think you’ll like that too.

Book review; Collapse by Richard Stephenson

Collapse (New America Book 1) by Richard Stephenson

The future of the world and America, in the hands of corrupt politicians, fighting against a mighty Islamic Iranian Empire, this story has a great premise, and is told in a well written style from many and varying points of view.

What become clear is the USA is on its last legs and something has to give. .

I did enjoy this book and felt for the character and the horrible plights, but towards the end I became a bit disillusioned with the forced conversations and what felt like a over concocted ending.

I don’t think I’ll read the second part, even though the book shows America where it could be ending.

            Three stars, an OK read.

The Choosing by Jeremy Laszlo

Book Review, The Choosing by Jeremy Laszlo.

Jeremy started with gusto and created a fantasy medieval world of gods, battling for control. The prologue got me hooked; the first few chapters fairly flew by as the Twins, Garret and Seth, set out on their life of adventure.

Then the whole thing came to a crunching halt, when Sara arrived, the middle section of the book being more slushy romance than fantasy, made worse, by the 20th century slang, ‘Do I look cute.’ Then the hair removal cream and thongs were introduced. I almost gave up, but I’m glad I didn’t as in the end the book perked up to a level that I would like to read the second book in the series. Why? Because the slushy romance is over, they are together, let the fantasy fiction begin.

Would I recommend this book? No, if it had some series editing and cutting back it could be good, Jeremy can write well and delivers.

But fantasy books shouldn’t read like mills and Boon.

Knights : The eye of Divinity by Robert E Keller

Knights: The eye of Divinity http://www.amazon.com/Knights-Divinity-Novel-Fantasy-Series-ebook/dp/B005620I2M/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top

A true fantasy novel, Dwarves, goblins and Elves (Birlotes), this story is very well written and the writer, Robert, E, Keller knows his craft. So what he has written is easy and enjoyable to read.

The book starts, and feels like a combination of Harry Potter and The Lord of the Rings, not a bad thing as I love both of these books. Then it goes its own way as we follow our reluctant hero, Lannon, through his training and facing of demons.

This story could have been excellent and got five stars, it built up well, though some of the characters were a little inconsistent, then it started to flow well, building up to what I believed would be a final confrontation, then nothing. The story stops and they go back to training. I felt a little let down. I can understand there is more to come, however, an end should answer some questions and leave a cliffhanger of a big finale, this did neither.

Negatives said, it’s still well worth reading and well worth 4 stars.

Zombie review, Z Plan: Blood on the sand by Mikhail Lerma

Review by Jeremy Poole @jeremypoole2

I’m a great fan of the Zombie Genre, but am often exasperated by the feminization of the genre, with high kicking Buffy types. Mikhail, however, doesn’t disappoint with his hard hitting story of a US soldier trapped in the Middle East by a zombie plague outbreak and desperately trying to find his way home.

Cale, our hero, battles with the dead in every gory fashion expected in a zombie book and comes out on top. If anything as a hero he’s a little too good for my liking, a little darkness would make him more real. The writing flowed well and the characters felt real and came to life (or not). I especially loved the change in the POV to a zombie POV at one place in the book.

I’ve given the book 4 stars and not five for a couple of reasons, firstly, the story lacked a little reality, when Cale returned to the city, He was on a boat, with fishing gear and it was raining, why did he need to run an hour through a city? Aren’t there restaurants on the quay side? Secondly the end was a cut and shut, I understand that there is a second novel coming, but I’d have liked a little payback for reading it.

These negatives aside, a solid, well written Zombie piece.
