I’m a great fan of the Zombie Genre, but am often exasperated by the feminization of the genre, with high kicking Buffy types. Mikhail, however, doesn’t disappoint with his hard hitting story of a US soldier trapped in the Middle East by a zombie plague outbreak and desperately trying to find his way home.

Cale, our hero, battles with the dead in every gory fashion expected in a zombie book and comes out on top. If anything as a hero he’s a little too good for my liking, a little darkness would make him more real. The writing flowed well and the characters felt real and came to life (or not). I especially loved the change in the POV to a zombie POV at one place in the book.

I’ve given the book 4 stars and not five for a couple of reasons, firstly, the story lacked a little reality, when Cale returned to the city, He was on a boat, with fishing gear and it was raining, why did he need to run an hour through a city? Aren’t there restaurants on the quay side? Secondly the end was a cut and shut, I understand that there is a second novel coming, but I’d have liked a little payback for reading it.

These negatives aside, a solid, well written Zombie piece.

Book review by Jeremy Poole.

Strategos: Island in the storm (Strategos 3) By Gordon Doherty

This novel brings to an end the Apion, Haga, trilogy. The final throws of the doomed Byzantium Empire are written through the eyes of our hero the Strategos Apion. The story is the blend of war, treachery, love and hate, blended together in an unforgettable mix.

The Haga had me hooked and I find myself reading as much as I can about this rich and colorful period of Roman history.

Well worth a look.
